Polarized Light : Production and Use
William A. ShurcliffPolarized light (linear, circular, and elliptical) is defined first in traditional terms, then in the more versatile terms of the Poincare sphere, the Stokes vector, and the Jones vector. A table compares the different families of terms. The methods of producing modern sheet-type polarizers are described, and the transmission curves of the principal types are presented. Special polarizers for use in the UV and IR portions of the spectrum are described. Natural sources of polarized light are surveyed.
Clear accounts of the Jones calculus and Mueller calculus are presented, and all principal matrices of polarizers and retarders are fisted for ready reference. A survey of major applications, an extensive bibliography, and a subject index are included.
